A dental crown is a ceramic, porcelain, or metal cap placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore appearance and function. Dental crowns are a long-lasting solution to a weak, badly damaged, irregularly shaped, or stained tooth.

Custom-made and simple

A tooth that is broken, damaged, or in poor condition can be harmful to your health. It can also affect feeling comfortable when smiling, affecting self-confidence. Dental crowns are almost exactly how they sound – a crown, or cap, that restores your tooth for an aesthetically pleasing appearance. Placing a crown is a relatively simple and minimally invasive procedure. The crown is custom-made to fit perfectly with your other teeth, and when set correctly, it should last for many years.

Save a damaged tooth with a dental crown

If you have a badly damaged tooth, your dentist will have two options: Save it using a dental crown or extract it. If a tooth has been treated for decay several times, a dental crown may be necessary rather than another filling. The crown covers the whole tooth and protects it from further corrosion.

Do I need a dental crown?

Here are some of the reasons you may need a dental crown:

  • You have a broken or fractured tooth.
  • Your tooth is badly decayed.
  • You have large or fractured fillings.
  • You have had a root canal.
  • Your teeth are stained, chipped, or misshapen.

ConfiDental in Beverly Hills offers various dental treatments, including root canals, dental implants, veneers, and surgical extractions. If you are experiencing any trouble with a tooth, we recommend scheduling a complimentary dental consultation with Dr. Massaband. She will recommend the best dental treatment option for your unique needs.

The dental crown placement process

This process begins with a consultation and exam, where we develop a plan for you and take dental impressions to ensure a precise fit for your tooth. We also treat and resolve any decay or infection before placing a temporary crown on your tooth. This first appointment typically takes between an hour and 90 minutes.

Once your custom-made crown is ready, you will come in for your second appointment. Your dentist will remove your temporary crown before placing your long-term crown on your tooth and making sure it fits perfectly. Finally, your dentist will bond the crown to your tooth using dental cement, which usually takes 30 minutes.

How long will my dental crown last?

Dental crowns are strong, durable materials that can last for a long time despite the wear and tear of chewing and biting food. If you take good care of your teeth, your dental crown should be able to last for over 30 years.

Restore your smile today

Crowns allow dentists to restore form and function to your tooth without performing an extraction, as it’s best to save as much natural tooth or enamel as possible. Crowns also replace severe cases of tooth decay that have resulted in tooth loss.
