What is Emergency Dentistry?

Dental emergencies can be painful and may happen at any hour of the day. When you crack or chip a tooth or knock it out in an accident, it can be essential to see your dentist immediately. At ConfiDental, we offer emergency dentistry procedures in Beverly Hills after office hours and on the weekends.

What is considered a dental emergency?

Some dental emergencies are painful, while others may not cause you any pain. It is essential to know whether your condition is an emergency and needs to be dealt with immediately or if it can wait until you can schedule a regular dentist appointment.

Any sudden pain in your teeth or gums should be considered an emergency, as it may be a sign of infection. However, many dental emergencies aren’t painful. Some dental emergencies include:

  • Fillings that have fallen out
  • Badly chipped teeth
  • Knocked out teeth
  • Crowns that have fallen out
  • Bleeding gums
  • Sudden onset of pain in your teeth or gums

What do I do if one of my teeth has been knocked out?

Surprisingly, even a tooth that has been knocked out completely may be possible to salvage. You may need dental care to save the tooth within an hour, so don’t wait. Contact us immediately to schedule an emergency appointment. If one of your teeth has been knocked out, follow these steps:

  • Rinse the tooth with water, taking care not to touch the roots.
  • If possible, guide the tooth gently back into its socket.
  • If the tooth cannot be put into its socket, you can place it in a glass of milk until you get to your dentist.

What should I do if I have lost a filling or crown?

When you lose a filling or crown, your tooth is exposed and more vulnerable. It may chip or crack and deteriorate more quickly without the crown to protect it. It is vital to seek emergency dental care. Don’t try to glue your crown or filling back in place. Most likely, your dentist will need to examine the tooth to ensure that the structure of the tooth is still viable. Simply schedule an appointment as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the tooth.

Is a toothache a dental emergency?

A toothache is not always an emergency. However, it is an indication of infection or decay. If the pain is severe, spreads along your jaw or neck, or lasts more than a day or two, it should be considered a dental emergency. If in doubt, contact our office. We will happily answer any questions and schedule an emergency appointment if needed.
